Donna Eden to the Rescue

by Jen Springer

Anxiety therapy can come in so many ways. One of my favorite is energy medicine pioneer Donna Eden.

Let’s say you were at the grocery store on a busy Saturday. After shopping, you get into your car and you feel just drained, your brain is scrambled, and you’re feeling anxious. You’ve been zapped! Now what?

Here’s your Natural Anxiety Therapy Tip:

When this happens to you, take a few minutes by yourself. Go to the restroom, outside, your car, a bedroom – wherever you can have a few minutes of uninterrupted time to focus on yourself. Now do this exercise from my favorite energy guru Donna Eden:

Anytime you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or just plain “not right” this simple exercise would be great to do. This is anxiety therapy on the go! I’ve used it before I lecture, when I’m attending classes, during times of anxiousness or panic, or even after talking to someone who has stressed me out.

One of my other secrets is to use an essential oil blend called Valor. Before I do the exercise in the video, I will put a few drops on my palms and take four or five deep belly breaths. Then I’ll rub the residual oil on my ears and neck. This specific blend helps me feel centered and less anxious. Then I proceed to do the exercise from the video.

It helps to do the protection exercise in the Zip Up post and the one mentioned above daily as a part of your natural anxiety therapy program. Don’t forget Young Living’s Valor!
Watch the video again, then do the Wayne Cook. Tell me how you feel on Facebook.

Exercise is an important part of any health and wellness routine.

But sometimes, finding the time, or the place, or the right kind of exercise can cause the very anxiety attacks it’s suppose to help cure.

Here’s a little anxiety therapy exercise you can do anywhere, any time you feel your stress level start to rise:

Take a look around your surroundings. Find and focus on one object that is pleasant to look it. It may be small or large, brightly colored or quiet and dark. If you’re outdoors, for example, it may be a leaf on a bush, or the mailbox on the corner.

Whatever it is, you want to focus all your attention on this object as you inhale and exhale slowly and deeply for one to two minutes. While you are doing this exercise, try not to let any other thoughts or feelings enter your mind. If they do, just return your attention to the object.

At the end of this exercise you will probably feel more peaceful and calmer.

Any tension or nervousness that you were feeling should be diminished. In fact, the more often you do this, the faster and easier it should become to “train” your body to calm itself. What may have taken you five minutes the first time you did this, may only take two after a while.

Try this simple anxiety therapy the next time you feel those unsettling feelings trying to take over your sanity.

How To Handle Stress and Stay Sane

by Jen Springer

Fried, frazzled, and flipping out?

This is no way to be. Life is no fun when you feel like you are ricocheting through your day like a rogue ping pong ball.

We all use the phrases, “If I could just get through this I’d feel better”, “I’m so stressed out!”, and “He/she/this job is making me crazy!”.

Sound familiar? Over using the first phrase is something I’m guilty of.

Stress can suck the ever lovin’ life out of you … literally.

Our body goes into overdrive and plows through resources in order to handle stress. It’s similar to pushing the acceleration pedal to the floor and watching the gas gauge drop to empty.

It’s no wonder why out of control stress over a period of time leaves our guts trashed and adrenals smoked. Not to mention the gray hair and wrinkles!

The reality is, we all have stress and how we handle it determines our sanity. Some people glide through it and appear unaffected. How is that? Are these people super human?

No, people who appear to be unaffected by stress are simply well adapted. They know how to take care of themselves and mentally frame stress in a healthy way through trying times.

Recently I had a bunch of stress, but the good kind. All exciting and a bit overwhelming. Finishing off my students for the quarter, moving my horses, and re-configuring my business definitely had the potential to throw me into an anxious tailpsin.

Now that all the stress is wrapping up I know I handled it better than I did in the past. I slept well, my body didn’t inflame, and I didn’t spaz out during any of it. That is an achievement!

Here are a few things I did differently “take care of myself”:

1. Vitamin C, at least 1000 mg every day. My body loves vitamin C!

2. GABA: the amino acid for “calmness”. If I felt ANY hint of stress I took 200 – 400 mg at the time.

3. If something started to get me riled up I’d ask myself, “Is this worth dying for?” In the long run it is the harsh reality of chronic stress.

4. Acupuncture or chiropractic sessions every week.

5. Essential oils of Stress Away and Valor.

Changing these things made a huge difference with how I felt during all the chaos as well as post-chaos. Oh, one other thing. I didn’t work until all hours of the night to get things done. Sleep was a priority. Hence why the lapse in blog posts and webinars!

I know you have stress helpers of your own, visit me over on Facebook and DO TELL! Everyone loves hearing what works.

by Jen Springer

No, I’m not talking about owning a handgun or buying Kujo as your new anxiety therapy.

As I meet so many people with anxiety, I do notice we have one thing in common. We are all extremely sensitive to others and often get caught up in other people’s energy.

In essence, if someone is angry, in crisis, or negative – we pick up on it because most anxious people are extremely empathetic.

Unfortunately, it brings us down we don’t separate ourselves from them. Maybe I’m not speaking to you on this one, but I know that I sometimes feel drained after I talk to someone like that.

A few years back I had an photo done of my energy field. Right after the photo was taken, I talked to a man who had a medical condition similar to me. He drained me and I felt totally discombobulated for hours. I went back to the people who did the photo of me earlier and they did another one. Literally, my energy was drained and it showed up on the photo!

I wish I could find those pics so I could post them for you. But, I didn’t protect myself and I let him drain me. That’s the eye opener, yeah he drained me but I let him. I let him steal my mojo!

How does this relate to anxiety?

Being drained from situations like this is very hard on your stress processing centers. Have you ever been drained after being somewhere or with someone? Maybe even anxious from the drain?

So how can you personally protect yourself?

This is what I do, I learned it from an Energy Medicine expert named Donna Eden. She calls it the ‘zip up’. Has something to do with making your central meridian stronger so you can ward off other people’s negative stuff. I found a video on You Tube that shows you how to do it.

Donna is the queen of energy healing, talk about a lady with good vibes!

The other thing I do is envision an invisible shield around myself where people’s negative stuff bounces off and disintegrates. I make special effort to be conscious to do this when in crowds or I know I’m going to meet up with people that might drain me. It really works, simple anxiety therapy.

In a few days I will post on what to do if you do get zapped.

Now go practice keeping your energy to yourself!

by Jen Springer

Anxiety relief can be found many places.

We hear about tapping on pressure points or thinking ourselves back to the planet when we are about to skyrocket to the outer orbits with panic or anxiety. But honestly, when I was in the midst of an attack – I couldn’t remember where to tap!

In fight or flight, my mind would go blank. All I could remember to do was reach in my pocket and grab one of “my oils”.

I could get grounded enough to open the cap, put a few drops on my palm to apply to the back of my neck and under my nose. Then, I was back to earth and the surge of adrenaline would subside.

Sensuous exotic flowers and ancient uplifting resins were my saviors during the time in 2007 when I crashed and burned for months my docs couldn’t figure out what was triggering the relentless panic, anxiety, paranoia, and weird thoughts.

What kept me “hangin’ on” during desperate times were the essential oils I applied to the back of my neck, feet, and belly numerous times a day.

Something as simple as a little glass bottle would bring me immediate relief when anxiety would strike. There were four oils I liked the best, two blends called Valor and Harmony along with two singles called frankincense and ylang ylang. Of course there were other Young Living Oils I used; however, these were the fantastic four.

Daily I’d use Valor on the bottom of my feet first thing after my morning shower before I put my sockies on. Harmony I’d apply to my belly because I always felt like there was a rogue train blasting through it.

‘The sweet earthy blend I’d make up for my emotions was a few drops of ylang ylang mixed with frankincense. I’d apply this to the base of my skull, ears, and temples. I’d also diffuse (not burn) this dynamic duo while I slept at night to help me settle down to sleep.

Thank goodness I had been using essential oils for many years prior to becoming sick. I had the “good stuff” that worked versus chemical who-knows-what from health or bath stores. Being a scientist, I knew those could be filled with chemicals and other nasties that would make my already crazy brain worse. No way Jose!

Oils helped me pull through a tough time of my life. But I haven’t retired them! Now a days they help my sleeping, low thyroid, sore muscles, and the best part … I love they way they smell!

Oils are my best friend because they work so fast. One whiff and I feel comforted.

Have you oiled today? Tell us what your faves are!

Adrenal Fatigue: The RIGHT Tests

by Jen Springer

Everyone has a different opinion, what should you do?

One thing’s for sure, guessing what your adrenal health is NOT the way to go. So many of the adrenal fatigue symptoms cross over to other imbalances in the body. Nagging problems like fatigue, foggy thinking, poor memory, insomnia, bloating, irritability, and chronic inflammation all can have many causes. Talk about confusing!

To mix things up even more, there are 3 primary stages of adrenal fatigue: acute, fatigue, and exhaustion. All of these show up different with testing. Plus, you’d better pray your doctor / health practitioner knows how to interpret your test results properly. Different phases of adrenal trouble require different treatments to help pull you out of the never ending fog.

Whatever you do, DO NOT let your doctor pull your blood for a one time test at 8 am. It is a complete waste of time and money. Adrenal tests measure the hormone cortisol, which changes throughout the day. Taking a one time test is silly, unless you happen have a problem at 8 am. People with adrenal issues can have spikes or crashes in cortisol at any time – not just 8 am.

One of the docs I fired ordered an 8 am test, which came back normal. I was in the slippery stage 3 exhaustion, which often looks normal on tests. He was belligerent about taking a functional test that takes multiple samples over the entire day. For another 4 months I suffered with raging anxiety 24/7, tremors, and paralyzing exhaustion. His only answer was to offer me Prozac; no thanks dude!

A few months later I found another doctor who ordered the right test. This test measured my adrenals by taking cortisol samples 4 times a day plus DHEA.

The results? Surprise, surprise … the results showed my cortisol levels were off at all other times of the day but 8 am! At the time I was frustrated because I could have been feeling better 4 months prior if I’d had the right test to begin with.

So what do you ask your doc / health practitioner for? You need to ask for a test that checks your cortisol rhythm (most likely 12 hr) and DHEA-S.

DHEA-S is a metabolite of DHEA and is more reliable than DHEA alone. If you can get an average DHEA-S, that would be fabulous.

Of course if you can check all the other hormones too, go for it. If you haven’t had a full hormone panel in a while, it’s best to have one so you’re not guessing with your supplements (prescribed or otherwise). Plus, funked out adrenals mess up other hormones too like melatonin (sleep), testosterone, progesterone, estriol, and estradiol.

To recap, ask for an a cortisol 4X and DHEA-S 2X. That means a four sampling of cortisol over 12 hours and two averaged samples of DHEA-S. Capisce?

Getting the results of your tests provides radical mental relief. You’ll know where you stand. Then, it’s time to take action and get your body strong again through diet, rest, supplements, and laughter.

Remember, different stages of adrenal problems require different protocols.

The next step? If you don’t have one, ask your health care provider for an adrenal test. If he/she has no idea what you’re talking about, contact my office at Support@NaturalAnxietyTherapy.com.

Working with your local practitioner is preferred, but some of you live in areas where this isn’t possible. I’m not a doctor, but I can coach you through the confusion of rebuilding your adrenals!

by Jen Springer

I’ve been off a few weeks catching my breath and having some fun.

The past few years have been grueling. Some days were so stressful I felt like I was going to implode! Which is better than feeling like I was going to “crack” like I did in 2007. Completely different feelings; although both stressful.

Stress caught up with me. Part of my 2 week hiatus included a full check up with my holistic doc. Anxiety and panic has been gone for a few years. My blood sugar has balanced out as of the past few months. Plus, I don’t need to carry and EpiPen in case of accidental food allergen anymore. I felt like celebrating, until …

Last Tuesday my doc called with the lab results. My thyroid, liver, and cholesterol were off!!! What the? (More on what I’m doing to correct these things later.)

What bugs me is I felt I’ve done my best with taking care of myself by regularly receiving massage and Reiki. Yoga, strength training, eating right, and “letting stuff go” are part of my daily practice as well.

So how did my body get out of whack again? STRESS.

I was eating well and going through the motions to maintain myself, but I wasn’t playing enough. I’m a self proclaimed intense person and a workaholic. That phone call from my doc was a turning point: I decided it’s time to have more fun.

Playing isn’t an option, it’s a requirement to feel mentally and physically well. We can eat perfect, exercise, and sleep; but if we don’t experience “FUN” by letting our hair and gotees down we WILL hold pent up stress.

Last week I witnessed this first hand. My partner Monty and I went to one of those crazy huge waterparks to blow off steam. Friday morning we were sitting in the hot tub and both of us were feeling a bit frustrated from some silly things that happened. I looked at Monty and said, “Lets go to the slides and let go of this crappy attitude we have!“ He gave me a weird look as I popped out of the tub and sprinted over to the body slides. Honestly, just looking at the length of the slides freaked me to the point of bolting but I didn’t want him to know that. (Look at the pic above, those are the twisty coils that went outside of the building!)

We jumped into tandem slides and whooshed down to the bottom. As we came out of the tunnel’s end, we both stood up and our frowns were turned upside down! We were laughing and any cares we had about the morning’s frustrations were gone. We both agreed that we didn’t have a clue how badly we needed this get-away and we take ourselves too seriously on a daily basis.

My point? Do something that is slightly scary and has the potential to be extremely embarrassing! Have some fun and step out of your comfort zone. That weight on your shoulders and worries in your mind will go POOF.

I’m not going to bore you with how your brain’s neurochemistry changes from chemicals released from laughter and play, just trust me on this one.

Think of something that makes your tummy flutter, DO IT.

Get crazy, be silly, embarrass yourself … it’s the best anti-depressant you could take and has only smiley side effects!

You gotta come find me on Facebook and let me know what “THING” you’re going to do!

From A Moment For Yourself, Mar 2011 Self Magazine.

As I read the March issue of Self magazine, I ran across this sweet little excerpt that I know you’ll love.

Part of achieving vibrant health is re-defining our own boundaries and prioritizing self care.

The reason we spiral down into a depleted state is because we put EVERYTHING else before us. Soccer practice, doing laundry, the project at work, dinner with the in-laws, and cleaning the house became more important than our own health.

Right now you’re thinking, “But Jen, I don’t have time for myself. Between my family and work, I’m lucky if I get 4 hours of sleep at night”.

When feel our lives are out of control we become frustrated and forceful in our actions. Guess what creeps in? Anxiety and depression, they are a smack on the head your life is going the wrong direction!

Nourishing your health is not an option, it is a requirement to feel alive and happy.

Imagine your physical, mental, and spiritual health is like a garden.

If you plant crops season after season without composting, weeding, and aerating, what happens? The fruits and veggies start to rot, get disease, and won’t grow.

Have you ever seen one of those gardens that is so bountiful that its energy jumps out at you? Those types of gardens you want to sit in all afternoon and absorb the vibe. Caretakers of those gardens prune the plants, rotate crops, and amend the soil. Conscious gardeners even talk to the plants or play music for them!

Our health and happiness is just like a garden, we must nurture it every day. Even if it’s just a little bit, over time the results are profound. Depression lifts, patience come back, that heavy feeling in your chest melts away, and then you remember … “I haven’t had a panic attack since … I can’t remember!”

Enjoy!

Take The Reins

Think about what makes you happiest – the one thing guaranteed to get your heart racing and a big grin spreading across your face. Got it? Good. Not do that thing. Yes, today. Taking control of your life is about knowing what you want and are going after it without hesitation. You don’t need permission. You just need to know you deserve to be happy.

Thanks Self magazine writer, whomever you are!

In case you’re wondering, that fuzzy creature in the picture above is “my thing”. What’s yours?

Adaptogens: The Swiss Army Knives For Adrenal Fatigue

by Jen Springer

Adaptogens, sounds like a virus or some other cootie doesn’t it?

Far from it, they are your best friends if you have any of the enigmatic health conditions that doctors are scratching their heads over.

The adrenals are those little walnut sized buggers that sit on top of your kidneys. I refer to them as “the spark plugs of life” because they give us our zip and keep us running. Even though they are little, they have a big responsibilities.

When in full gear, they give us the juice to push beyond exhaustion or keep us in high alert when in danger. It is my personal opinion that because we run around like chickens with our heads cut off and don’t take the time to rest and recover, everyone should support their adrenal glands.

You’re probably thinking, “does that include me?”.

Let me give you some signs of adrenal fatigue and you decide:

Dragging your buns out of bed but you’re wired at night

PMS and other hormonal whackiness

You’d rather clean your toilet than have sex

Can’t poop or poop is spastic

Any autoimmune craziness

You hurt all the time without injury

Feelings of anxiety, panic, depression

Blood sugar cannot stabilize

The bags under your eyes look as if you haven’t slept for months

Your fingernails split vertically

I write about adrenals quite frequently because I feel they are at the core of all dis-harmony in the body. I feel supporting these little glands are imperative in any health recovery program and will speed up progress by light years. But, one must be careful on which herbs they choose. There’s been many a day where I’ve been wired up all night, felt anxious, or had crazy blood sugar swings because I chose the wrong herb!

My encouragement is to first get an adrenal function test prior to taking any herbs so you don’t take the wrong herbs and make matters worse. (Ask me how I know!!!) If you have a cool integrative doc, ask him/her for a 12-hour cortisol test with DHEA.

If your doc thinks you’ve been smoking crack and has no idea what you’re talking about, you might find an indy lab who will do it like ZRT through Canary Club.

Reason? Certain herbs should be used for high cortisol and others for low.

There are some that will do double duty also but honestly, it’s best to know what you’re targeting. There are a zillion adaptogens and they loved by Chinese and Ayruvedic Practitioners. Adaptogen means they support immunity, stress, and can do the ‘ol presto chango to do what your body needs. That’s why I love them, they are broad spectrum and are multi-functional.

I know learning about herbs can be confusing and overwhelming, so I’m giving you a few to start playing with.

Here are my top 5 of all time:

Ashwadandha: Just saying that name ASH-WA-GAN-DA is fun!!! Say it 6 times super fast and you’ll smile for sure. This herb is best for HIGH cortisol situations. If a person knows when they are spiking (from the tests), do it then. I know I spike at night and that’s why I wake about 3 am. So, I’ll do some of this in the late evening to help even me out. This one is also helpful for lack of bedroom ‘mojo”.

Eleuthero: Also known as Siberian Ginseng. If you have LOW cortisol, this herb might be your consideration. If you have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), DO NOT USE this herb. Like a ding-dong I was taking mitfuls to help my adrenals, but I didn’t know that if you are a hypoglycemic this herb should be avoided. This herb rocks for everyone else and is especially great for people who are so burned out they aren’t making cortisol anymore.

Licorice Root: This is a tonic herb for the adrenals that is great to pair with eleuthero. It tastes yummy and can even be used as a tea. People with adrenal fatigue often have low blood pressure. This herb will help raise it up so upon quick standing the room won’t spin anymore! People with high blood pressure should not use this herb. When under heavy stress, I enjoy this as a tea in the morning.

Rehmannia: I love this herb! I love this herb! I love this herb! This little adrenal tonic is pretty much a-ok for high or low situations and FANTABULOUS for blood sugar folks like me. A little harder to find, but a great choice for overall adrenal support.

Lycium Barbarum: Just like rehmannia, this baby can be used for everyone. It’s not really an herb though, it’s a fruit that the Chinese have been using for eons to support kidney and liver chi. I have never had a negative response to this botanical and I know it has been instrumental in repairing my insulin resistance issues and unclogging my sluggish liver. I’ve also known men who’ve had trouble saluting (you know what I mean, wink wink) start running around the house after their wives about a week after loading this little gem. I prefer the liquid form over the whole dried berry because if the adrenals are in trouble, so is digestion. The liquid is assimilated much faster, that means feeling better in short order.

Become friends with the adaptogens, learn about them, and use them.

Get tested before using targeting herbs like ashwaganda or eleuthero so you’re knowing which tool to use for the job. You wouldn’t use a screwdriver to do a hammers job would ya? I’ve tried, doesn’t work! Tonics like licorice and rehmannia and if you’re not in severe adrenal fatigue, you might be able to get by with just these.

The lycium barbarum can be used by anybody in any situation. I have a friend who makes a concentrated and great tasting formula (unlike ashwaganda or rehmannia!) for this, contact me and I’ll show you the way you’ll look forward to taking your adaptogens every day.
